Sustainability

Environment (E):

Our shared value efforts are focused on employees, customers, the communities we serve, and the environment. As a company we invest our time and resources in supporting this basic principle. At Interenergy, sustainability is a fundamental pillar and impacts everything we do internally and externally; and it is based on our organizational values, on the business ethics with which we conduct our business and on strict compliance with the laws that govern our operations.

Since 2017, we have made it a priority to actively endorse the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with specific attention to the following ones related to the Environment:

SDG 7:

Affordable and Clean Energy

SDG 12:

Responsible Consumption and Production

SDG 13:

Climate Action

Achieve net-zero by 2050

As a company that produces and markets electrical energy, we are aware of the environmental implications inherent to our operations. We constantly seek to mitigate our negative externalities to the environment, by promoting practices that:

  • Promote the efficient use of resources (materials, energy and water) and responsible waste management.
  • Contribute to the management and mitigation of our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, in line with the goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2030, or even sooner.
  • Reduce the impact of our operations on biodiversity, and encourage the development of environmental conservation initiatives.

Decarbonization

Decarbonization is a complex and challenging task, but it is essential if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change. The sooner we start decarbonizing, the easier it will be to achieve. In this sense, we have established the goal of achieving net zero emissions in all our assets by 2050, by replacing fossil fuels with cleaner energy, among other efforts aimed at decarbonization, such as the Paris Aligned Plan, which we hope to complete by 2023.

At Interenergy we are in the process of significantly reducing or eliminating carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the atmosphere. It is a key strategy for mitigating climate change.

CEPM Zero

With a billion dollar investment, the CEPM Zero project aims to achieve carbon neutrality at CEPM through renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and pumped hydraulics, along with cutting-edge storage technology.

Sustainable Energy

For more than 30 years, Interenergy has promoted renewable energy in the countries where it operates contributing to the sustainable development.

Our company has been changing its form of energy distribution in recent years, embarking on a rapid investment process in less and non-polluting energy sources, such as gas, solar and wind power.

Embracing sustainable energy is a cornerstone of our company’s social commitment, reflecting our dedication to environmental stewardship and societal well-being.

  • Recognizing the urgency of addressing climate change, we have invested extensively in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. By harnessing these clean technologies, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.

  • Our commitment extends beyond the generation of clean power; we prioritize energy efficiency initiatives and promote the adoption of electric vehicles to further mitigate environmental impact. Through partnerships with local communities, we actively engage in educational programs on energy conservation and advocate for responsible consumption. By integrating sustainable practices into our operations, we aim to inspire positive change, foster environmental awareness, and ensure a greener, healthier future for generations to come.

Sustainable Cities

At InterEnergy, we encourage the cities we serve to be increasingly inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

As a socially responsible electric company, our commitment to sustainability extends to fostering the development of eco-friendly and resilient urban environments.

We actively collaborate with municipalities to promote sustainable cities that prioritize energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance overall quality of life. By investing in smart grids, energy-efficient infrastructure, and clean transportation solutions, we contribute to the creation of urban spaces that are environmentally conscious and technologically advanced. Our initiatives also involve community engagement programs to raise awareness about sustainable living practices, encouraging residents to adopt energy-efficient technologies and reduce their ecological footprint. Through these efforts, we aspire to play a pivotal role in shaping cities that harmonize economic growth with environmental responsibility, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and vibrant future for urban communities.

  • Responsible consumption: We empower the community to be amplifiers of good habits, through campaigns and educational talks on topics such as reducing electrical risks, promoting the efficient use of energy, duties and rights of customers, culture of legality, care and protection of services public, among other topics; with the aim of raising awareness about the sustainable use of energy.

Data of interest: Thanks to these efforts, our customers have managed to minimize their electricity consumption by up to 20%.
  • Safe homes: We develop social initiatives with the aim of promoting home security. We identify families in vulnerable conditions to analyze the state of their homes and work on restructuring the electrical network to optimal conditions, to guarantee the absolute safety of that home.
  • Electric mobility: InterEnergy promotes electric mobility in the country as part of its commitment to sustainability and the environment, and as an effective way to fight climate change. As a first step, we are in the process of changing our fleet to 100% electric vehicles.

Data of interest: 1st. Latin American company to subscribe to The Climate Group’s EV100.

Environment

Actively lead alliances to promote the care of biodiversity and encourage the development of sustainable destinations in the countries where we have a presence. We assume the commitment to develop our activities in a responsible and environmentally friendly way.

For this reason, we promote energy efficiency, the rational use of resources, the prevention of pollution and compliance with existing environmental regulations in the Dominican Republic among our collaborators, suppliers and clients.

Given our companies’ connection to tourism and economic development, we are dedicated to continuously improving our environmental performance. Interenergy is committed to designing and implementing actions to:

  • Anticipate the environmental effects derived from the development of all our activities and take the necessary measures to prevent environmental impacts.
  • Promote and encourage the rational and efficient use of energy in our customers and suppliers.
  • Properly dispose of the waste that is produced, establishing practices to reduce and recycle it.
  • Promote the development of a culture of conservation of environmental quality in our workers, contractors and suppliers.

Circular Economy

The circular economy is a concept that is interrelated with sustainability, and whose objective is that the value of products, materials and resources (water, energy …) remain in the economy for as long as possible, and that the generation of waste is reduced to a minimum. It is about implementing a new, circular -not linear- economy, based on the principle of “closing the life cycle” of products, services, waste, materials, water and energy.

We at InterEnergy believe that promoting th circular economy is key to a better, cleaner and more sustainable world. That is why it’s an essential part of our sustainability strategy and represents an opportunity for climate action and furthering the energy transition.

Our sustainable energy model, which is committed to the decarbonization and electrification of the economy, in addition to innovation, is directly aligned with the circular economy through the reduction of emissions, the use of renewable resources for production, the improvement of efficiency, the optimization of resources and the maximization of the use of waste.

Learn how are District Energy project impacts our clients.
  • One of our biggest projects in this area is the development of the first and only district energy project in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean to provide chilled water and hot water to hotels located in the vicinity of our plant. In order to take advantage of the residual energy of CEPM’s plant in the Dominican Republic and offer better services to the hotels, we installed 3 boilers of 6,300 kW of power that distribute hot water overheated to 120 degrees Celsius to the hotel zone, for the generation and supply of sanitary hot water and ice water.

  • How does it work?
The route of the pipeline of the District Energy system between CEPM’s generation plant and hotels is 14.5 kilometers long, covering a radius of 4 kilometers. In the industrial area of the hotels there are absorption chillers installed to produce chilled water, and heat exchangers to produce hot water. In CEPM’s generation plant we take advantage of waste heat from the power generation process to produce high temperature hot water. The hot water provides the thermal energy required to operate the absorption chillers and the heat exchangers.

This project allows savings of close to 30% in the operating costs of hotels and avoids the emission of 28,000 tons of greenhouse gases per year.
