Generadora Gatún

  • Generation: Combined-cycle natural gas

  • Start of operation: October 2024

  • Installed capacity: 670 MWp

  • Location: Isla Telfers, Provincia de Colón, Panama

The Generadora Gatún plant of Group Energy Gas Panama, owned by InterEnergy Group (51%) and AES Panama (49%), located in the province of Colón, Republic of Panama, is the largest natural gas power plant in Central America and the Caribbean.

With an installed capacity of 670 MWp, it is a key asset for the group and a central piece in strengthening Panama’s energy system. Generadora Gatún will reduce volatility in electricity rates and ensure greater reliability for the system, adding firm capacity and operational cost efficiency. With this asset, Panama can consider a greater integration of renewable generation, mitigating the intermittency effects of hydro, wind, and solar resources, thus accelerating its energy transition process.

The use of natural gas, as a cleaner fuel, will allow for a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 1,900 million tons annually. With a 20-year fuel supply contract at a stable and competitive price for the market, it represents an approximate savings of 20% compared to current gas market prices. Additionally, it reduces the risk of power supply shortages due to climate change effects and the volatility of fuel prices caused by geopolitical conflicts.

We are private power pioneers: wherever we invest, we play an important role in the economic and social development of countries, markets and communities.
