CEPM announces its decarbonization using solar, wind and green hydrogen energy within this decade.
January 2022
- CEPM will be one of the first electricity companies in the world to achieve net zero emissions by decarbonizing its generation through the installation of 600MW from 100% renewable sources. This plan is part of its ‘CEPMZero’ initiative, which will promote the Dominican Republic as a model tourist destination on a global level.
- The announcement took place at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), during which CEPM was honored by the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, in the presence of DR President Luis Abinader, as a tribute to the impact that this company has had on the development of the tourism sector on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
MADRID, Spain- CEPM will convert its generation to 100% renewable energy installing more than 600MW of solar, wind, pumped hydro and green hydrogen power through an estimated investment of US$1 billion. This is part of a firm commitment to clean energy, in which CEPM will become one of the first zero-emission 100% renewable electricity companies in the world, helping make the Dominican Republic the first tourist destination to become a global model of sustainability.
The announcement took place at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), during which CEPM was honored by the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, in the presence of DR President Luis Abinader, as a tribute to the impact that this company has had on the development of the tourism sector on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
Rolando González-Bunster, president of InterEnergy Group, CEPM’s parent company, said: “As pioneers of clean energy in the region, at InterEnergy Group, we have always maintained a solid purpose of providing reliable, profitable and clean energy solutions through trailblazing projects in all the countries in which we operate. We have always been innovative and take charge of great challenges; For this reason, at COP26 we assumed the commitment to decarbonize CEPM, with a structured plan to achieve it in less than a decade”.
González-Bunster further said: “Our goal is to promote the transformation of the electrical system in all the countries where we operate, which is why we have systematically invested in 100% renewable and low emissions energy through projects such as the first wind farm in the Dominican Republic, Quilvio Cabrera, in 2011; District Energy’s first and only project in the Caribbean in 2013; the largest wind farm in Central America, in Panama, with 215MW since 2015; the transition to natural gas of the three units of the Energas plant, in San Pedro de Macorís (DR), in 2020; the construction of the Gatún gas plant, of 670 MW in Panama; a development portfolio of 1 GW in renewable projects; and the unprecedented boost of electric mobility; just to name a few examples”, completed the executive.
Herrera added that: “As part of this initiative, we also plan to continue promoting electric mobility at all levels, through the migration of our entire corporate fleet and the installation of an increasingly ample network of charging stations for electric vehicles. In addition, all the charging stations located in our area will be powered 24/7 by 100% renewable energy”.
Mónica Lupiañez, Interenergy’s Renewables Director said: “We are at a key moment in the development of alternative energies to fossil fuels, through increasingly innovative technologies. Our commitment to lead the energy transition and achieve carbon neutrality comes with the great challenge of storing the renewable energy we produce; hence, this project, using green hydrogen, allows us to get closer to this goal”.
For CEPM, the key to development and growth is achieved through coordinated work and alliances with various national and international actors, which is why in this case it has invited Enertech Holding Company, a company of long-standing clean energy investment and development of the State of Kuwait, which acts as an investor in clean energy in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
