On April 24, 2014, InterEnergy invested, through its subsidiary UEP Penonome II S.A., in the development and construction of the Laudato Si wind park in Penonome, Panama.
The project, with 215 MW in total installed capacity, is the largest of its kind in the Central American and Caribbean region. It features 86 Goldwind G109 2.5 MW wind turbine generators with a hub height of 90 meters. This turbine is a three-bladed, permanent magnet direct-drive, upwind, horizontal-axis, pitch-regulated, variable-speed machine.
The first tower was energized on the 28th of January, 2015, and on February 1st, 2015, the first kWh was sold through UEPII’s contract in to the Panamanian grid.
Laudato Si´ is part of the Global Compact, a United Nations initiative that urges the private, public and voluntary sector to guide their strategies and operations towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, as part of our business strategy, we implement sustainable initiatives and programs with a preventive approach to environmental challenges, and also encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies, both in our daily operations and with the local community.
With our operation in Panama, Laudato Sí contributes to reducing global warming as a result of the greenhouse effect, avoiding the emission of 450,000 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere, mitigating the emission of 1,000 tons of NOx (nitrogen oxide). and 500 tons of SO2 (sulfur dioxide), on average per year.
